How to Measure Your Fireplace for a New Mantel

A step-by-step guide to measuring your fireplace opening and wall space to ensure the perfect mantel fit.

How to Measure Your Fireplace for a New Mantel

Why Accurate Measurements Matter

Before ordering your cast stone mantel, accurate measurements ensure a perfect fit and professional installation. Here's everything you need to know.

Tools You'll Need

  • Tape measure (25 ft recommended)
  • Level
  • Pencil and paper
  • Camera or smartphone

Step 1: Measure the Fireplace Opening

Measure the width and height of your fireplace opening (the area where the fire burns). Standard openings range from 28" to 42" wide.

Step 2: Measure the Surrounding Wall

Measure the available wall space on each side of the opening and above it. This determines how wide your mantel legs can be and how tall the header should be.

Step 3: Check for Obstructions

Note any windows, doors, built-ins, or other features near the fireplace that might affect mantel size.

Step 4: Consider Proportions

A well-proportioned mantel typically extends 3-6 inches beyond the fireplace opening on each side. The shelf should be 8-12 inches deep for proper display space.
